Christmas Trivia

5 days to Christmas! Is everybody ready?

The shop is now on a short break for Christmas. It is too late to post anything and I need to concentrate on organising our festive preparations. I am so looking forward to Christmas!

Since there is not a lot happening on that front, I thought it might be fun to do something different today. Most of us like trivia of one kind or another, and many of us like Christmas, so how about a little compilation of Christmas Trivia?

The Three Wise Men – A well-known aspect of the Christmas story, except that the bible never actually states the number of wise men.

Jingle Bells was written by James Lord Pierpont. It was originally called 'One Horse Open Sleigh' and was actually created for Thanksgiving entertainment for a Sunday school in Georgia.

Mince pies – these were originally made from minced meat, fruit and spices. Back in the time of the Tudors, these used to be called 'shred' or 'shrid' pies. It doesn't seem to matter much what the meat was, either. Rabbit, mutton, and beef were all used, and in the 16th century many recipes used 'neats' or beef tongue.

Boxing Day traditionally gets its name from the practice of giving money (or sometimes gifts) to the needy, or those in service jobs. Priests used to open the church's Alms (or charity) boxes on December 26 and distributed funds to the poor.

'Good King Wenceslas Looked Out On the Feast Of Stephen' - The Feast of Stephen is another name for Boxing Day. St Stephen was the first Christian martyr, who died in 34 AD.

Happy Christmas, everyone!

After last orders I will be closing the shop on Tuesday 20th December so that I can concentrate on organising our festive festivities, but will re-open again after Christmas, all refreshed and raring to go!

Friday 2 December 2016

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all those of you who celebrate it!

I hope you get to spend it with family and friends!

Thirty-four days and Jade

Is everyone well? Staying warm? Of course, if you're in one of those countries that are sweltering right now – can I come and stay with you?

So... yes. It's been cold and windy. Not bad for November, really, but I'm a bit of a wimp these days.

I have, however, been reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal busy making things. Christmas stuff, pretty stuff, fun stuff... did you realise that it is only...

34 Days to Christmas!

Isn't that exciting?

Here are some of my current range of necklaces:

A bit of variety there, huh?

I mentioned this bit of news on my Twitter, but they discovered a HUGE jade stone in Myanmar. It weighs a staggering (in more ways than one!) 175 tonnes! That would make one hell of a necklace...

Read about here.

Happy Halloween and the Reculver babies

Happy Halloween!

And, because of the date, I thought I'd share a local ghost tale with you. Some of my Rose Bay pictures show the ancient Roman ruins at Reculver. Here – have another one!

There is a legend that at night, especially stormy ones, you can hear the pitiful cries of babies. Well. When they were investigating the site back in 1966, they discovered infant skeletons hidden the walls – apparently some kind of Roman sacrifice ritual.

You can read about it here.

Have a great evening, everyone!

Feeling jaded?

And now for something a little different – my new sari silk and jade necklace.

I call it Jade Garden

The beautiful sari silk comes from India, where it is produced by women's co-operatives and sold through a fair trade supplier. The sari silk is hand-dyed and made from the offcuts of leftover sari silk fabric and is truly georgous.

I am increasingly trying to use fair trade and other ethical suppliers in my products, and some of the materials I use are:

Sari silk from India, leather cord, hemp and beads from Peru, Ceramic focals from Africa.

Also included in my necklace above are pretty yellow jade beads and jade heart pendant. If you like jade, you might be amazed by the massive size of the jade piece just found in Mynmar (Burma).

The stone is 4.3m (14ft) high and 5.8m (19ft) long, and is reportedly worth an estimated $170m (£140m). See the report here.

Christmas countdown:

68 days!

Tuesday 11 October 2016

Resins and Reculver

You can tell that is now October, as everyone is abandoning their summer frocks and shorts for woollies and overcoats! Actually, I quite like this time of year – not too hot and generally, not too cold either. You can take a lovely walk in the crisp air and then return to a warm home, and that suits me just fine. Recently we took a walk along the seafront and it was really nice – even the sun was shining! The view below shows the Roman ruins at Reculver.

Two of my new resin necklaces, available in my Etsy shop.

Only 74 days to Christmas...

Friday 7 October 2016

October Already

October already! Really?? I don't know where the year is going to!

Talking of which, did you know it is only 78 days to Christmas?

I have been hard at work making things whenever I get a moment (or two!) and I promise I have some fabulous new items coming up. Today I've got some super earrings for you to look at, and includes some Halloween and Christmas items as well.

And I will leave you with this little poem from Robert Frost called October.

"O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
Tomorrow's wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
Tomorrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow.
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know.
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away."

Vegetable Ivory

95 days to Christmas! If you want to keep track of that deadline yourself, you can do so here

I've recently discovered the wonderful tagua nut. It comes from a palm tree that grows in the rainforests of South America – Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. It contains a liquid that will eventually harden and looks like ivory. In fact, it is regarded as a viable alternative to elephant ivory, and is used by many artisans nowadays in their crafts and carvings – earning its nickname of 'vegetable ivory' – and helping to save our precious elephants. And because I love effalumps, I'll share this fabulous picture from Ravi Patel:

Take a look at my Tagua nut necklace – big, chunky, and wonderfully tactile - and now in my Etsy shop.

And what's been keeping me happy since my last post?

There's that lovely elephant picture, for a start!
We went to see the new Bridget Jones film and it was very enjoyable. The scene in the hospital had me in tears it was so funny!

Tuesday 13 September 2016

Categories, Christmas and Captains

With my head full of new Christmas products, and knowing it is only 102 days to go, I decided to give my listing categories in my Etsy Shop a bit of an overhaul. I have less categories, but many are now divided into smaller sections. So, for example, instead of 28 items in my Steampunk section, I now have 21 items under Steampunk necklaces and 7 under Steampunk earrings, and I think this might make it simpler for my buyers (or browsers!) to find their way around.

Here is a picture of four of my current necklaces:

And things that have made me smile since my last post:

Spending a lovely day with my daughter indulging in a little (or a lot!) of retail therapy!

And hearing that John Barrowman could be returning to Dr Who as Captain Jack Harkness! Sadly, Torchwood was not as good as it could have been, but Captain Jack made it worth seeing. Sometimes, anyway...

Sunday 11 September 2016

Smiley necklace and smiley days

Here are four of my recent necklaces, already in place in my Etsy shop.

I'm still making my Christmas items and, BTW, did you realise it is only 104 days away? Just thought I'd cheer you all up with that one!

And, talking of cheering up, some things that made me smile since my last post:

My cat, who always runs up to be petted whenever I go in the garden to put the washing out.

Sunshine days!

Exciting packets of pretty beads dropping through my letterbox!

How about you? What's made you happy lately?

Wednesday 7 September 2016

September dawns

A new batch of lovely glass necklaces for you! And all available in my Etsy shop.

I'm still busy making new things, and in this lovely hot weather I'm having to turn my thoughts to making my Christmas products! Trying to make products a season or so in advance is hard! Perhaps I should play Christmas music and pack ice around me feet! Do you think that would work?

Friday 26 August 2016

Sunny days making things

Remember I said I'd been making lots? Well, I've been making so many things I haven't had time to post! Sorry...

How about these little beauties, as a taster?

Is it warm where you are? It is so hot here (stop sniggering, those of you from hot climates!!) that you don't want to do too much. So, lots of cool drinks and summer frocks (the boys look real pretty in those!) on the menu.

Talk soon!

Friday 12 August 2016

Roses are red. And yellow.

I now have more than 250 posts on my Istagram page! I have been a busy girl!

Talking of which, here is a preview of some upcoming necklaces:

I have been making a lot of things lately, so watch out for lots of new things in my Etsyshop.

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary and we went out for a lovely meal. He also bought me two bunches of roses! Well, he couldn't decide whether to go for 'romantic' deep red, or my favourite colour (yellow) so chose both...

Saturday 30 July 2016

One Hundred

I have 100 Tweets on Twitter!! I just love to retweet funny or quirky posts...

Lookie! New products in my Etsy shop!

I thought I would like to share some stuff that made me happy since my last post:

These beautiful sunflowers, a cheerful present from my lovely daughter

I bought a couple of new tops for work and another to wear when we go out

And this news item about the new cat in Downing Street. As there is also two other cats in his territory, the fur will fly!

Summer heat

Hi all! How is your summer going? It's real hot here, and humid with it, and you really don't want to do too much! However, I have been making, and here is a picture of my new earrings. A few are in the shop and the others will be coming soon.

I have also been making lots and lots of Bohemian style jewellery, and I have to say that I've been having a lot of fun with it! Why not check out some of them in my Etsy shop?

Also, I just heard this quote and I love it, so I will share it here.

“It’s your road and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.” ~Rumi

Thursday 14 July 2016

New shop banner

I have a quirky new banner in my Etsy shop, made by my husband. It is a cartoon, and cleverly uses several of the charms and shapes from my designs. Friends tell me it looks fun, so I'm putting a link here for you to have a look at it yourself.

I hope you like it!

Thursday 7 July 2016

Game of Cats

Summer has finally arrived and we have sun! (Yes, I know – the English are obsessed with the weather...)

If you are a fan of jewellery, and Game of Thrones, you might have noticed some of the fabulous items the characters have been wearing. If so, you will be interested to learn that, for a rather hefty price tag, you can buy similar designs from MEY.

I really want that dragon necklace....

Talking of dragons, well, cats actually, how about this little picture of one of mine looking for food in the garden...

Saturday 25 June 2016

Polly is all grown up!

Who is Polly, I hear you ask? Is it my daughter? Uh... no. Polly is my shop mannequin. What? Doesn't everyone give names to inanimate objects?

Last year I needed a mannequin to display my necklaces properly, and the only one I could find at the time was one in a frothy pink frock. With spots on. Very pretty, but not terribly practical – the lace kept snagging up the necklace cords – so reluctantly, I decided to give her a makeover. Something simpler, pretty but plain, and something that didn't compete with the designs I wanted to show off. You can read the amusing story of how we acquired the original Polly outfit here.

It was quite a battle getting the dress off, mind you. I wanted to save it in case I decided to put it back on her one day, but it was a real game-and-a-half. Not only was the dress stitched on to the mannequin, but it was glued on as well! I eventually got it off, mostly intact, so I should be able to reinstate it should I choose to, and with only a new seam or two to show the difference....

Anyway.... here is the The New Outfit!!!

New necklaces will be photographed on the new outfit, and the current ones will slowly be phased out as they expire.

I think it looks more professional, and hopefully shows the products more clearly.

What do you think?

Monday 20 June 2016

A summer's day

I haven't shared any earrings for a bit so to rememdy that, I have some shiny new designs for you. These are my current and upcoming pieces, so watch out for those in my Etsy shop

June isn't exactly flaming here, not a lot of sun here on the coast but it was nice on Sunday, which enabled us to have a lovely family day out. Lots more of those, please!

And since we're talking about summer (yes, we were!) I'll leave you with a snippet from the bard himself:

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? (Sonnet 18)

~ William Shakespeare

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Two years!

My Etsy shop is two years old! My, how time flies...

I am beginning to understand how my new Twitter account works, but I know I still have a long way to go. If you want to come along for the journey (I won't make you buy anything!!) I would love to have some company.

Here is a batch of my latest necklaces and pendants, most of which have already been posted.

So many products, so little time...

Tuesday 7 June 2016

Twittering

I have a new Twitter account! I haven't the faintest idea how to use it, but I'm working it out as I go. If  you want to come on over and laugh at... um... join me, I'd love to have you. I won't just be doing product posts, I want to do things that are funny and/or quirky, too.

See you soon?

Monday 30 May 2016

A sea of yellow

I have been slowly adding my new bag jewellery to my Etsy shop, along with other new products, of course, and I've been busy making new products as well.

The weather has turned cold again, and as I write this I can hear the wind whistling through the trees outside, and you'd think it was October! However, England is very changeable and it can change at the drop of a hat! It was really nice the other day and while we were out I couldn't resist taking a picture of the gorgeous golden yellow fields all around us – yellow is so cheerful!

I have some interesting new products planned, as well as various changes in the pipeline, so please stay tuned!

NEW! Bag Jewellery

Ta Da!

Today I am announcing my new range of handbag charms! Or, if you like, jewellery for your bags...

Here is a preview just for you:

What do you think? This batch has all sorts – Christmas, Halloween, animal, Steampunk, spring, summer, autumn...

I'm in the process of adding them to my Etsy shop, and I have loads of ideas for more – so stay tuned!

Saturday 14 May 2016

Knotted necklaces

I have – finally – got to grips with the new art programme and have now started to add my new products to my Etsy shop. Below is a preview of a few of my new Bohemian range, in the form of four knotted hemp and shell necklaces. These were super fun to make!

Since the English have a preoccupation with the weather, I'm going to regale you with stories (or possibly, a story!) of how our glorious summer has turned back into winter. Because it has. Summer dresses are back in the wardrobe and winter woolies are back on. Well, not quite, but it is back to being cold again. I hope your weather is better!

Oh – and I was on the bus the other day. Our buses have a few seats at the front for less able passengers. You can use them, but are supposed to give them up if somebody else needs them more. I think the wording is something like, 'for disabled or elderly'

Well, I was sitting at the back, minding my own business, when this old lady got on the bus. Eventually. Poor thing looked to be about 110, and she staggered to the aforementioned seats and plonked herself down. After she'd collected herself, she started reading the reserved- seats notice and said to herself, ' Hmm. That's not me...'

And up she got, and staggered off to the back of the bus!

That amused me all day...

I hope your day is fun, too!

Monday 9 May 2016

Images and art

If you've been wondering where the promised new items have got to, um.... sorry. They're made, and photographed, and... well. That's as far as I've got because my art programme crashed, leaving me unable to resize and prepare the images for Etsy.

However, having received some helpful advice on replacement art programmes I have now got a new one, which actually looks promising.

So hopefully, normal – and new! - service will be resumed very shortly. Thanks for staying tuned!

Sunday 1 May 2016

Bohemian summer

We have sun! Quick – where are my summer frocks? Over here you don't know how long the summer will last...

I've been making some Boho/Gypsy/Hippy jewellery recently and I can say that I've had a whole lot of fun with it! Today I'm bringing you a preview of my latest batch of earrings, some of which are indeed Bohemian. Check out the new Bohemian range in my Etsy shop.

Bring on the sun! And those summer days and festivals!

Tuesday 26 April 2016

Hail, it's new summer necklaces!

I've got a load of new necklaces, most of which are already up in my Rose Bay Shop on Etsy. Lovely summer necklaces, which, as I'm posting this and looking out of the window... its hailing. And cold... you can tell its an English summer, right?

I also have a brand new line coming your way soon, within the next week or so, so watch this space!

Thursday 21 April 2016

All choked up

Something new! A beautiful choker, measuring roughly 15” is now for sale in my Etsyshop. This is the first to be sold there – by me, anyway – and is one of my new summer designs. It is made with little aventurine chips and beads on a handmade, hand-wired silver-plated base. Even the hook clasp is handmade!

I'm very excited about my new summer range, and I also have several other new lines coming soon too!

Please stay tuned!

Thursday 14 April 2016

Toppings of one kind or another

Here are some of my new necklaces, some of which have already been posted in my Etsy shop, and there is more to come.

If you've been over to Etsy, then you know that they have a new format going on. I gather it is particularly aimed at those of you who browse on mobile devices, which is a bit of sad state of affairs for those who do not... however. Keeping up with the changing needs of the customer is important to any business, as those who don't bend will break, and we certainly don't want that, do we?

I have a temporary but nice and bright picture in place for now, but I should have a new cover banner coming shortly. Times are a-changing...

Exciting!

Monday 28 March 2016

Summer and the winds are cold!

I hope everyone had a good Easter? Did you remember to put your clocks forward? If you get confused whether to go forward or back with your time, I remember which one to do from this little saying:

Spring forward, Fall back.

Sadly I didn't invent it, but I do think its clever.

So it is now summer, not that you'd know it from the cold 70mph winds we've been getting, but still...

How about a link to some of my summer jewellery?

This quote is kind of appropriate:

What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness
~John Steinbeck

See you soon!

Friday 18 March 2016

Dog Day Evening

Two new doggie breeds of earrings in the shop!

You've got to admire my dogged determination, right?

Oh, and since this has turned into a dog- style post, you're expecting a dog quote, right? Wrong. Have two...

Happiness is a warm puppy. ~ Charles M. Schulz

and

Dogs never bite me. Just humans. ~ Marilyn Monroe

Hope its not raining cats and dogs where you are!

Daffydowndilly

Spring has sprung up all around us with blossoms and crocuses (Croci?)  and my favourite, daffodils. All those golden heads waving in the breeze always makes me smile! Here is a picture taken from outside our local public house.

Daffodil Trivia – did I mention that I love daffodils?

Ancient Romans cultivated daffodils and believed that sap extracted from the flowers possessed healing properties.

Daffodils were a symbol of chivalry during Victorian times. They are a symbol of hope today.

And, since it is impossible to think of golden daffodils without thinking of a certain poem, I'll leave you with that. Extra bit of trivia – did you know that Wordsworth actually wrote two versions of this poem? The second version is probably the best known, and the one I use below, but if you want to compare, you can find the original here.

*

I wandered lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a Cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and Hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden Daffodils;
Beside the Lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:-
A Poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company:
I gazed---and gazed---but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude,
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the Daffodils

Happy Mother's Day

It is Mothering Sunday here in the UK and I would like to wish a very happy Mother's Day to all mothers everywhere.

'Mother'
By ~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham

Mother is a name held sacred
      By most mortals of the earth;
It means great love and sacrifice
From the very day of birth,
A love that's so full of beauty,
      So tender, so very true!
      Something, seemingly, from Heaven
That has come to me and you.
There's no love so understanding
And so faithful to the end
      As a Mother's love—God bless her!—
That to us our Lord did send.

Marching and leaping

Happy Leap Year Day! You know, I've always wondered if you were born on the 29th February, do you only age one year for every four?

I have added two new necklaces to my Etsy shop and been working on a load of new earrings over the last few days. I just need to have pictures taken so that I can unveil them.

Gem Trivia, taken from Wikipedia:

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock. It is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimum crystal growth.

Not black, but how about a quick shufty at one of my bead boxes?

Exciting, right?

And how about a March quote?

It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.

- Charles Dickens, (Great Expectations)

Friday 26 February 2016

Pearls and necklaces

It is so cold today... and as I have been making some summer necklaces recently, its been a little bit surreal! Pictures have been done, so here is a preview of some of my upcoming necklaces and pendants, shown on our new sea-theme design board:

These will be added to my Etsy shop soon.

Gem Trivia

The largest pearl ever found was the Pearl of Allah – now known as the Pearl of Lao Tzu – and was discovered in the Philippines. It is not, technically, a gem but is instead a 'clam pearl' from a giant clam. The pearl measures 24 centimetres in diameter (just over 9 inches) and weighs around 6.4 kilos (14lbs) Imagine that on your finger!

Tranquil sea

Spaniel and St. Bernard dog earrings are now back in the shop, and some new breeds are coming soon, so watch this space!

Because I haven't posted a local picture lately, how about this tranquil  beach hut scene from Rose Bay Country?

Gem trivia:
Did you know that the only gemstone found so far in meteorites is Peridot?

And I'll leave you with this thought:

If you do nothing, then nothing will change.

Bracelet yourself!

Some of my new bracelets have been posted on my Etsy shop, and have been garnering a certain amount of interest. This one is adjustable and went up today:

I have 100 posts on Instagram! Well, there were actually a few others but some of the early pictures weren't very good so I ended up deleting them. Don't tell anybody though...

Weekends are usually my best chance of making things, and so far I have made some blue necklaces, a pair of steampunk earrings and a cute summer bracelet for myself. Well, I need to be my own advert, don't I? :o)

Gemstone Trivia:
Painite was recorded by the Guiness Book of Records in 2005 as the world's rarest gemstone mineral. It was first discovered in Myanmar (Burma) in the 1950's by British minralogist Arhtur C. D. Pain.

I will leave you with this thought -

Follow your heart. But take your brain with you.
